I like Comic-Cons.

I don't go for the panels. -- As cool as they usually are, I just can't hear what's being said.  Even with mics.  And not hearing is amazingly frustrating.  You'd think that, by now, they would have an ASL interpreter at these things, but I've never seen one.

I don't go for the cosplay.  -- I *love* seeing the costumes, but I don't choose to wear one.  Mostly because I haven't taken the time (or money!) to put one together.  I just throw on my favorite superhero t-shirt and go.  This is somewhat ironic because when I go to Renaissance festivals I do dress up (usually).

I don't go for the meet-the-celebrity autographs / photographs.  -- I think it's fantastic when famous people are willing to meet to the people who helped build their fame.  It's twice as awesome when they are personable and honestly nice about it, especially the "getting mobbed by fans" part that sometimes happens.  I can respect it, I just don't want to be a part of it.  I'm too much of an introvert.  And I'm pretty sure no celebrity wants to meet me for a quiet talk somewhere about nothing of consequence, where they don't have to be "on," and I have zero expectations of them.  They probably have real friends for that.

What I *do* go for is to walk around and be amazed.  Amazed at people's creativity and cleverness.  Amazed at the artwork.  Amazed at the merchandise (witty shirts are going to cause me to go bankrupt).  Amazed at how much awesomeness is out there for everyone to enjoy.

It gives me great joy.  It also gives me great hope -- maybe one day my own creations will inspire people.

Go forth and write!
